Complete Guide to Ebike Maintenance and Winter Care

Owning an ebike is a fantastic way to explore your city, tackle trails, and enjoy the outdoors — but like any vehicle, it needs regular care to perform at its best. With Alberta’s wide temperature swings, knowing how to maintain your ebike in summer and winter, as well as how to care for your battery, is essential for safety and longevity.

Whether you’re riding a high-performance commuter or a rugged trail model, these tips will keep your ebike running smoothly all year long.

Summer Maintenence

Summer ebike maintenance focuses on keeping your bike clean, checking tire pressure, and monitoring brakes and gears. Dust, mud, and heat can affect components, so wiping down the frame and drivetrain after each ride is essential. Maintaining proper tire pressure and inspecting tires for wear or damage helps prevent flats and ensures smooth handling. Batteries should be stored out of direct sunlight, and gentle care of the electrical system helps preserve performance. Reliable models, such as those from Aventon or Velotric, perform well during long summer rides when maintained correctly.

Winter Maintenence and Battery Care

Winter riding in Alberta presents unique challenges. Snow, ice, and road salt can damage metal parts and reduce battery efficiency, making winter-specific care crucial. Cleaning the bike thoroughly after each ride, lubricating the chain and moving parts with cold-weather lube, and adjusting tire pressure for better traction are all important steps. Fat-tire or step-through models, such as Heybike and Himiway bikes, offer improved stability and comfort for winter conditions. Brakes should be tested regularly, and hydraulic systems may require adjustment to compensate for the cold.

Battery health is especially important in winter. Lithium-ion batteries should be removed from the bike and stored in a warm, dry place when not in use. Charging the battery to around 50–70% for extended storage helps maintain capacity, while using the manufacturer’s charger ensures safe and optimal charging. Warming the battery slightly before riding in cold temperatures can help maintain performance and prevent reduced power on the trail.

It's also very important to swap your tires to studded winter tires, especially in climates like Alberta, where we get extreme cold temperatures, which cause our roads to be covered in a layer of ice. Check out our winter tire section here.

Choosing the right ebike and following these maintenance tips ensures that you can enjoy year-round adventures across Alberta. By following proper seasonal care, maintaining your battery, and inspecting key components regularly, your ebike will remain reliable, safe, and enjoyable no matter the weather.
